Story and photos by Karl Lund
For years Phillip had talked about getting a classic Chevrolet truck. Prior to his deployment to Afghanistan he vowed to find and restore one when he returned home.
Phillip was killed in Afghanistan 16 days into his deployment on 10-13-2010.
His heart broken family, friends and community sought to make Phillip's dream a reality. Phillip's memory would live on in this beautifully restored 1951 Chevrolet 3100 pick up truck with 28,000 original miles on it. All parts are original and rust-free. The original "Stovebolt" 216, 6 cylinder engine is in perfect running condition. This 62 year old American masterpiece was exactly what Phillip would've wanted.
The restoration began with the help of friends, family and contributed goods or services from numerous sources. It took 18 long months to bring this Chevrolet to the unbelievable condition you see it in today.
The Chevy with the "fallen hero's" theme in honor of Phillip will be used in parades, car shows and military events to raise awareness for all who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Three other United States Marines died with Phillip.
