What do you do when you watch a bad movie?

EAT FRIED CHICKEN

There’s nothing worse than getting up too early on a Sunday Morning, finding nothing on TV to watch, and then putting in a terrible movie. Yes, The Family, starring one of my all time faves, Mr. Robert Dinero, stunk. That’s being kind. I must admit, I watched it all the way through, waiting for the good part, but I’m still waiting. When the movie was finally over, I needed a pick me up, so I went online to find the best fried chicken restaurant in St. Louis. Although I was tempted to take a ride to Highland, Illinois and check out the Diamond Mineral Springs for some “family style” chicken (my mother’s favorite place), I figured just going near Soulard was far enough. Besides, we got to see a lot of the cute little dogs in costume going to the dog parade. Yahoo! We went to the ever-popular Hodak's.

By getting there at 11:30, we probably missed the extra busy Sunday lunch crowd. We were seated and greeted by our wonderful server, Abbey, very promptly. Although there are many standard American items on the menu we were there for the chicken, however, my eyes somehow found the one thing I crave all the time: chicken livers.

After no more than a few minutes, Abbey took our order. We, of course, had to try some chicken wings, but which ones? With three varieties, you must be careful in your decision. We decided to try Momma’s Sticky Wings. They were fried to perfection, crisp to the bite, and in a sauce that had a wonderful blend of sweetness with a slight spicy kick.

Jane and my son Pauly both ordered the fried chicken. One thing that makes fried chicken not good is when it leaves grease all over you. Not at Hodak’s. Nice big pieces, good flavor, and no grease. It is served with two sides. Jane got the baked beans and fries; Pauly, double fries. I’m particular about fries; they were good, but not great. There were plenty though. The beans on the other hand, were great!

Now back to the livers. I know they’re not for everyone, however these were some of the best chicken livers I’ve ever eaten. And here’s what you do. Referring back to the chicken wing sauce, save some to dip the livers. One word, AWESOME! Mine was served with three sides, so I went with the onion rings, tasty but small, green beans, which were okay, and the great baked beans. Always forgetting to try something before I leave a restaurant, I had to try the coleslaw. It was definitely made in-house, and it may have been the freshest slaw I’ve ever tasted—crispy and very flavorful.

As if we hadn’t eaten enough, my son said he now needed some chocolate. Not seeing anything that looked like it was in his selection process for chocolate, I decided to take him somewhere special to get it. No need to go on and on about that, just look for the picture at the end and you will see where we went.

In the end, I had a great Sunday. Okay, the movie stunk, but Hodak's made it all better. Believe me, I’ll be back.
