It’s All Three!

When I go to dinner there are two things that can make an evening memorable other than the food. First, it never hurts to have a good companion to eat with, and second, the owner who goes out of their way to make you feel special. At Shu Feng in the heart of “China Town” in University City, I had both, my good friend, Ron Stevens to dine with and a very delightful owner, Liling Wemhoener. Liling was very proud of everything on the menu at the restaurant that she bought 13 years ago, as she should be.

Truth be told, there are many Asian restaurants on Olive Blvd, and I’m sure that some of them are great, but we decided to try this gem that features a combination of Taiwanese, Chinese, and Korean food all under the same roof. Neither one of us had ever been there; however, I was told by a good friend that we really needed to try it. We were so glad that we did. Although all the appetizers looked delicious, we decided to go light and just enjoy a plate of Pot Stickers.

They were fried to perfection and the dipping sauce was just right. Ron’s not as big of an eater as me, and although I would have liked to try an eggroll I am glad I didn’t. The best was yet to come. We ordered fairly traditional entrees. Moo Shu Pork and Chicken Egg Foo Yung. The flavor was great with both, and the Moo Shu came already rolled in the pancakes. That’s a huge plus for me. It wasn’t served with Plum Sauce and that was a little disappointing, but the flavor of the pork made up for it. The Egg Foo Young was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of a brown sauce over it. Now just after we were starting to get full, we asked to take a few pictures for this article and that’s when Liling not only introduced herself, but decided to sit and join us for a bit. She proceeded to fill us up with not just a lot more food, but several of her stories. She started off by bringing out a bowl of Red Beans that had an unusual but extremely tasty sweet sauce over them.

As if that wasn’t enough, she followed that up by bringing out one of her specialties, Crispy Sesame Eggplant. I almost can’t describe it. Picture General Tso Chicken with eggplant replacing the chicken, and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

How good was it? It was good enough that I went back two nights later to get more. Sorry, Ron! Now I’m almost starting to feel like I’m at my mom’s house having dinner. There was no way Liling was going to let us leave without trying her special dessert. Have you ever had Gooey Butter Rangoons? One word, WOW! Could it get any better than this? Not until she brought out the Raspberry Rangoons. It was almost like having to say “Uncle”. No more please. We couldn’t have eaten another bite. You know it’s funny; I acquired a taste for Asian food a long time ago, but never had an experience like I had at Shu Feng. On a personal note, thanks for dinner Ron and most certainly, thank you Liling for a wonderful time. You made our dinner a rare treat.
