If I was to draw a musical map Boss Hall would be a point somewhere between blues, jazz, pop and folk. Territory that is about individuality, well-chosen words, emotional soft spoken voices and above all songs that tell stories and have some real resonance. In The Pale is Boss Hall's debut album and it's special. After several listens it still reveals and rewards and is a welcome musical experience. This accomplished first album has a moony ambiance with elegiac guitar (Tom Hall), saloon violins (Kevin Corkery), mesmerizing dobro (Bob Breidenbach) and a gentle breeze of the flute (Margaret Bianchetta).
