I have never been to a poetry reading before, outside of my high school creative writing class. So when I was invited to go to the RIver Styx: Hungry Young Poets event at the Tavern of Fine Arts, I was not exactly sure what to expect. I was imagining scenes of coffee drinking hipsters in black turtlenecks, snapping after each poet read verses of artistic mumbo jumbo that would go right over my head. I decided to go anyway, though. I figured, worst case scenario, it would be a good story to tell.
